Sedation Dentistry

Arbor Dental offers sedation dentistry to patients who have fear or anxiety of dental treatment. Sedation dentistry is offered in different forms depending on the needs of our patients.

  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation – nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is inhaled through a small nosepiece that is placed over the nose. Patients using nitrous oxide sedation are able to respond to verbal commands and questions as well as physical stimulation.
  • Minimal or “Twilight” Sedation – this method is minimal sedation is administered through oral medication at a safe and effective dosage based on your past and current medical history. Similar to nitrous oxide, patients choosing this method can respond to verbal questions and commands as well as physical stimulation but the awareness of pain, sounds and smells is diminished.
  • Intravenous Moderate or “Conscious” Sedation – this method is administered through an injection and is immediately effective. Commonly used for shorter dental procedures, patients choosing this sedation method can respond to verbal questions and commands as well as physical stimulation but the awareness of pain, sounds and smells is significantly diminished.
  • Deep Sedation – This method of dental sedation is ideal for extremely phobic patients, those with significant medical conditions, and long and complex surgical dental procedures. Patients choosing this method are unaware of their surroundings, but can respond to repeated stimulation. They are essentially “sleeping” through their dental appointment.

Sedation dentistry relaxes the patient to the point that he or she will not feel anything during the dental procedure, and also most likely will not remember anything about the procedure. Multiple dental procedures can normally be completed during sedation dentistry, reducing the number of visits required.
